Since 2019, we have been working with the German-French TransEuropeExpress ensemble on the pan-European project “on the edges.” With guest soloists and composers from regions on both sides of the European border, we are realizing five individual projects that will ultimately be combined into a mosaic and a large overall picture. The project was inspired by the book “Entlang den Gräben” (Along the Trenches) by Navid Kermani, whose approach we are transferring to the musical field. The five projects function both independently of each other as individual projects and in combination, culminating in the performance of the entire cycle. For each project, a new, complete concert program was developed in collaboration with the guest artists/composers, performed, recorded as a studio production, and released. The programs consist of parts of the composition “on the edges” by Hans Lüdemann, compositions by the guests, and jointly developed ideas, arrangements, and improvisations.

Maghreb Express Majid Bekkas - oud/guembri/vocals (2019 - 22) Concert premiere and production in 2019 at BMC Budapest 2023 concerts at the Leibniz Festival in Austria and Cologne CD release in 2022

Polar Express Sofia Jernberg/vocals - Kalle Kalima/guitar (2020 - 23) 2020 Premiere at the Ruhrjazz Festival in Essen and production at the Maarweg Studio in Cologne during the Corona pandemic. CD release digitally in 2023.

Roman Express Rita Marcotulli/piano - Luciano Biondini/accordion (2022 - 23) 2022 premiere at the Casa del Jazz in Rome. The album was Rome as a co-production of the T.E.E. Ensemble with Musica per Roma and Villa Massimo, recorded at the Casa del Jazz studio and released in 2023.

Oriental Express Burcu Karadag, ney flute (2024 - 26) Prepared during Hans Lüdemann's extended stays in Istanbul between 2021 and 2024. Concert premiere and production in January 2025 at BMC Budapest. Angelika Niescier and Clara Däubler played in the ensemble for Silke Eberhard and Sebastien Boisseau.

The 5th and final project is planned for 2026/27:

Eastern Express Tamara Lukasheva, vocals - Tomasz Dabrowski, trumpet The fifth and final project will premiere in Budapest in July 2026 and will be recorded in a studio production.

The finale in 2026/27:
on the edges 1 - 5 Hans Lüdemann's multi-part composition “on the edges” connects the five projects and can be presented as a complete work at the end. The CD releases of “on the edges 1 - 3” were published by BMC records in 2022 - 23, the release of “on the edges 4” is planned for February 2026, and that of the complete project “on the edges 1 - 5” for 2027.
